Designed for the new Ontario Construction Adjudicator coming into effect October 2019, TCIC is offering the first of its kind course specifically designed to give the adjudicator basic technical knowledge needed when reviewing and evaluating technical construction systems and process related evidence provided by parties involved in a notice of non-payment referred to adjudication.
During this course, the attendee will study methods of construction used in vertical building; including concrete frame, steel frame, wood post and beam, building envelope and site development. Using a model commercial building, terms, building elements, site elements, electrical, mechanical and fire suppression systems will be practically examined in working groups.
This course is a must-have for anyone who desires to act as an adjudicator in construction. It will offer you the basic confidence needed to review technical aspects and the general nature of assembly of a vertical building project in Ontario.
Building Fundamentals for the New Ontario Construction Adjudicator – Level 1
Vertical Industrial/Commercial/Institutional Buildings and Site
Module 1 Designers and Consulting Teams
The participants will undertake to learn the various design consulting team arrangements, responsibilities and scopes of work through contractual engagements for various types of projects based on the owners desired construction delivery model. Using group exercises and lecture style, the participants will learn why different consultants work in varying capacities, based on requirements in regulation and what the scope of each consultant is, as defined in contract and the Ontario Building Code and Act
Module 2 Reading Drawings and Interpreting Specifications Basics
Using a model set of construction drawings, for a small commercial building and land development project, the participants will explore the basics of reading the drawings, and understanding the acronyms and design terminology used on drawings. We will explore plans, sections, elevations, and schedules in detail and how they interrelate and correlate to one another through tagging. We will use a reference specification document that will demonstrate how a 3 part specification is used in the field on construction sites.
Module 3 Construction Teams, Subcontractors and Suppliers
Assembling a construction team forms the basis for this module. Participants will learn how those teams are selected, and the types of communication systems used between them to deliver on the scope of work, schedule and reporting that is necessary to ensure the project is constructed in compliance with the law, and the owner’s requirements. We will outline intent in contract documents as it is defined by CCDC contracts versus the responsibilities of the professional builder to assemble using means and methods of the builder.
Module 4 The Building Process – Cradle to Grave
This module is designed to inform the participant how the entire kit of parts works together to move a project from contemplation and needs analysis through to completion and total performance. A candid real world exploration of consistent challenges including data drop, communication issues and more is explored that may result in payment and/or payment processing challenges.
